President's Message

I have recently returned from a week-end in Emmitsburg, MD for the Mid Appalachian Quilters Annual Retreat.  There is something awe-inspiring in spending three days with 340 women all focused on the love of quilting.   Our speaker was Donna Lynn Thomas, a teacher who has been known to many of us older quilters since the 1980’s.  It was fun to hear how her life had spun out in the years in between then and now.

The subject of Donna’s talk was “Memories.” She showed how her various quilts were made to commemorate a special occasion, a special person, or even just a meaningful fabric and design.  She told us about the importance of using quilts to keep memories alive, and how they put her back in the moment when she sees them.

When I returned, I was visiting with a friend and she showed me a quilt that was made for her.  Fran is a non-quilter, and she was so excited with the end result.  Her husband had passed away about six months ago and she had the quilt made out of his clothes.  There were some T-shirts, some pajama bottoms, other slacks and shirts and all of them had memories of their life together.  She said she could not bring herself to give his clothes to Goodwill, but once she chose what to put in the quilt, she could let go.  Now every time she uses the quilt, she has a feeling of closeness to her husband and the life they shared.

The point is that quilts are valuable in keeping memories alive.  Whether it is a person, a place or an event, the love stays with it. You have a chance to make your own memories.  Why not start re-living the good times through your quilts.  Happy sewing!!

CCQG Quilt Show 2018

QUILT SHOW UPDATE

 July/August 2017

We are moving along with the Quilt Show.  Postcard flyers are out advertising the show.  We have gotten Smithfield Barn to provide us with the accessories for the show floor, and they can be purchased if you would like.  They are antique quilt related items, and will enhance the overall appearance of the show.

We will be collecting mini-quilts and boutique items whenever you have them.  Also, we will be looking for door prize items after the first of the year.  We will wait a little while before we ask again for donations from manufacturers and quilt shop owners who were so generous for our auction.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.  If you have a specific job that you would like to take on, please let me know.  There is a lot of excitement being generated,  and I welcome any help you want to give.  Thanks.

Education August 2017

If you are an owner of a Singer Featherweight sewing machine you may be interested in checking out The Featherweight Shop at www.singer-featherweight.com.  They offer parts and accessories for your machine as well as many helpful tutorials on their YouTube channel (under the channel The Featherweight Shop).  A bonus to shopping on this site is the free shipping that is always offered!

I have recently purchased some small sewing scissors and notions for myself from Tooltron Industries.  I was impressed with their pricing, product offerings and fast shipping.  They have an online store at www.tooltron.com.  Once you sign up for their newsletter you will be notified of all sales and specials.

As a fairly new quilter, I am always looking to You Tube to further my knowledge.  The following channels offer great tutorials:

• You Tube Channel – Man Sewing

• You Tube Channel – SewVeryEasy

• You Tube Channel – GourmetQuilter
