President's Message

It is hard to believe that summer is just about over and we are squeezing out as much fun as we can while the weather is hot.  Sand between our toes and cool temps in the mountains will be memories in a few short weeks.  Kids will be back in school and more thoughts turn to quilting.

Fall brings crisp temperatures (or at least it used to) and lots of quilt shows.  I went to Ladybug’s show   and had a marvelous time.  The vendors were wonderful, the quilts were beautiful and it was a totally relaxing day.  We have the Oaks show coming up September, 14-17, and then the Undercovers show occurs October 20-22.  These are great places to get lots of ideas and inspiration for your own quilting.

Then there is the retreat.  It’s a fun time with about 30 women in a friendly setting in Amish country.  Lots of options for shopping at quilt stores as well as the outlets on Rte. 30.  My favorite shop is the Bake shop in Bird-in-Hand where I get the most wonderful pumpkin pies and freeze them for Thanksgiving.  There’s a farmer’s market next door with lots of surprises, and beautiful scenery wherever you look.  All in all it is worth the trip.  See Lee Paylor  to sign up.  It is Oc6tober 12-15.

So enjoy the rest of your summer, and keep in mind that we will be gearing up to get our own Quilt Show ready for May.  We hope to make it a memorable event also.

Monthly Charitable Gifts

We filled two cars with school supplies collected at our August meeting. The items were distributed to the Head Start Program and the Friends Association of West Chester. Both organizations greatly appreciated the generosity of our members.  The items collected will provide many children with the supplies to begin their school year.

In September, we will be collecting Pillowcases for Ryan's Smile. These cheerful pillowcases help brighten the day of hospitalized children. Please remember that the fabric/pillowcase should be laundered and put in a plastic bag. Click here for the pillowcase pattern.
In addition, this year, we will also be collecting handkerchiefs for mothers of children in the hospital. To make the handkerchiefs use pretty, floral patterns, cut 11" by 11", serge or finish the edges and add trim.

Looking ahead to October, we will be collecting items for the Coatsville VA. Items requested include:

• Personal Care: shampoo/conditioner, liquid body wash, shaving cream/gel, alcohol free mouthwash, deodorant, body lotions, toothpaste, floss, tooth brushes, denture cream, brush and combs, razors (disposable or electric).

• Clothing: new/gently used men's and women's clothing, new socks, t-shirts, underwear and wire free bras, slipper socks, new/gently used shoes/sneakers/work boots, coats/jackets, belts. Note: there is a need for extra large men's clothing.

• Miscellaneous items: forever stamps, stationary, paper/pads/envelopes, gift cards from retail stores and/or prepaid gas cards, phone cards, movie DVDs, coffee/tea, creamer, sugar and sugar substitutes, cosmetics, tissues, suitcases

For your convenience, a month by month list of the charities we support can be found below.

Thank you for your continued support,

Ann McErlean and Janet Creely

Challenge Quilts

Challenge Quilts for 2018 CCQG Quilt Show

The challenge for 2018 will be “Do Not Touch” mini quilts to hang with quilts at our quilt show in May, 2018. Penn Oaks Quilt Guild had small "Do Not Touch" quilts at their last show and we were inspired by them to use this idea as our challenge this year. I am planning to bring some to the September meeting to give you some ideas. Quilts should be small, about 8″ by 11″. Be creative! Think outside the box!  There will be prizes.

They must be finished by the February meeting with a 4" sleeve. These quilts will become the property of the guild for future shows or displays. But for posterity, please put a label on the back or at least sign your name.

CCQG Quilt Show 2018

August 17 After viewing the quilt show venue we are working to get the vendors established for the show.  We will have six vendors, mini quilts to raffle, a boutique table and bake sale along with showing our quilts. Keeping that in mind, I will need people to chair the following committees:  Door prizes, admissions, programs, signage and ribbons, white gloving, and bake sale.  We will also need people to man these committees, so if any of these jobs appeals to you, please contact me.  We have lots of names of people who want to help, now we need to know where you want to serve.  I will call a quilt show meeting in November of anyone who is interested in helping and we will get started in earnest after the first of the year.  Thanks for your consideration. Sewing room organizing tips –

Swiffer cloths are great for dusting off your machines, cutting tables etc.

If you have multiple sewing machines, plastic storage drawers are an easy way to organize the different feet, needles, etc. attachments.  Inexpensive drawer sets are found at Target and Walmart.

Special Announcement

 Quilt Opportunity
Last chance to help out a grieving widower.  We have had an inquiry about making a quilt from his wife's clothes.  He would provide the fabrics, and would like it to be pieced and then hand quilted. He is willing to wait as long as it takes and will pay accordingly.  Please contact Holly Rutkowski if you are interested, and she will put you in touch with the gentleman.
