In October we will welcome Thomas Knauer. He travels to us from Utica, NY. To Thomas, “quilts are first and foremost pieces of cultural expression; they tell stories and speak about the world in which they reside.” Much of his work is modern, however many of his quilts are based on traditional blocks and technique. His workshop and lecture are for everyone, no matter what your style.
His website is http://www.thomasknauersews.com. Please look on his website for pictures and more information about his work. He has recently learned that he has been selected to have a special display of his work at the Houston International Quilt Festival this fall.
Tuesday will be a learning, thinking, and drawing day. No machine required unless you think you may want to mock up some of your blocks or design. (The firehouse will be secure so use your own judgement is storing items there Wednesday.) You will then depart Day 1 and pull the fabric for your creation.
We will have our usual Guild Meeting and hear Thomas’s lecture on Wednesday. Thomas will be available for lunch. After lunch, he is willing to go shopping with us! You may pull your fabric from you stash, shop on your own, shop with Tom, or all three!
Thomas Knauer will “focus on helping quilters design their own quilts rather than particular patterns or techniques the workshop can be quite intensive and involve a good deal of individual discussion and exploration.” The workshop wil begin on Tuesday with design – “getting your quilt out of your head and onto paper.” After the meeting and lunch on Wednesday, October 11th Mr. Knauer has offered to go fabric shopping with anyone interested. The workshop will continue on Thursday, October 12th for sewing day! You will need your sewing machine and supplies on Thursday only.
Supplies: please keep in mind, the guild provides irons, ironing boards and design boards.
