President's Message

I just returned from a week-end at Penn State for my first tailgate ever.  My grandson is a senior there, and our family wanted to share a one-time event.  It is a whole different culture up there.  Acres and acres of portable tents were visible with people grilling food and drinking beer.  It truly was a Happy Valley.

I also went to the Oaks show last week and we had our own Happy Valley there.  Lots of happy ladies walked the show, viewed the competition quilts and shopped at the vendors.  Our challenge quilts were hung in their own special place, and it was a thrill to see them there.   Leslie O'Brien won a blue ribbon for Best Interpretation of Theme for her Villanova Quilt, and Stephanie Braskey won a blue ribbon for Best Hand Workmanship for I Get By with a Little Help from My Friends.  Congratulations to both of our  talented quilters.

Within the month, we will be sending out a survey about our guild.  It will arrive online and will only take a minute or so to answer.  All the responses will go directly to our Communications Committee through Google.  You can leave your name or not, it is your choice.  The purpose is to find out what you want happening at the guild meetings and other activities.  We don’t want to lean heavily in one direction, but want to help you learn more in your particular choice of quilting.  Also, you can give ideas for other activities that you might want to see happen in the guild, and tell us if there Is something you do not like about our guild so we can change it.

Not to be forgotten are the people who are struggling in Houston and Florida from the recent hurricanes.  Thank you for your generosity to the people in Houston.  We are currently gathering information on how we can help the folks in Florida through our Kids Quilts or donations.

So enjoy the beautiful  Fall weather and take time to visit the Undercovers Quilt Show held October 20-22 in the Brookhaven Township Building.  Let’s make our own Happy Valley at Goshen Fire Hall.

Challenge Quilts

Challenge Quilts for 2018 CCQG Quilt Show

The challenge for 2018 will be “Do Not Touch” mini quilts to hang with quilts at our quilt show in May, 2018. Penn Oaks Quilt Guild had small "Do Not Touch" quilts at their last show and we were inspired by them to use this idea as our challenge this year. Quilts should be small, about 8″ by 11″. Be creative! Think outside the box!  There will be prizes.

They must be finished by the February meeting with a 4" sleeve. These quilts will become the property of the guild for future shows or displays. But for posterity, please put a label on the back or at least sign your name.

Education Notes

Every month our Education Chair, Christine Fallon, provides us some tips or information regarding the art of quilting.  For Education Archives by topic, go to the web page.

October 2017

Embroidery floss plastic organizers can be used to organize your sewing machine feet.  Simply label the top with content of each compartment.

Machine needles can be simply organized in weekly pill organizers.

Cindy Z. let me know about a great You Tube channel for longarm and regular machine quilting tutorials.  Please go to whirlsnswirlsquilting on You Tube and check her out.

When using a large cone of thread, a thread stand is invaluable.  If you do not have a thread stand available, you can place your cone of thread in a tea cup instead.

Filling a pin cushion with steel wool helps to keep your pins sharp.

Orange wood cuticle sticks (found in the cosmetics dept of Target, Walmart, etc) can be used as a substitute for a stiletto awl.

Wonder Clips are a great tool to help when binding your quilt.  An inexpensive substitute would be to use hair barrettes or office binder clips.
