President's Message

November

I spent the week-end with my whole family at a wedding and it was wonderful.  It was so great to see my out of town siblings and reunite with their families.

It reminded me that we as quilters are part of a big family also.  Different branches take form as traditionalists, modern quilters, pictorial quilters, paper piecers, appliquérs, etc. but we are all part of one family.  I have been to countries overseas and been accepted as part of the family even though I did not know anyone there.  Quilt shows bring us together to share in our common interest also. I visited a quilt shop in Charlottesville and they welcomed my granddaughter and I like long lost cousins.

When someone in our family is hurting, we share their pain.  Please offer comfort to Ree DiGuiseppe who recently lost her son, David.  When you experience a loss or happy time in your life, please let Hattie Virgilio or myself know so that we can acknowledge that.

I hope you can take time now to enjoy the beautiful Fall weather with the mums and pumpkins in abundance.  Leaves are changing color and falling, so be careful on the roads.  I look forward to seeing you at Paoli Presbyterian Church for our November meeting.

Pat Barton

Challenge Quilts

Challenge Quilts for 2018 CCQG Quilt Show

The challenge for 2018 will be “Do Not Touch” mini quilts to hang with quilts at our quilt show in May, 2018. Penn Oaks Quilt Guild had small "Do Not Touch" quilts at their last show and we were inspired by them to use this idea as our challenge this year. Quilts should be small, about 8″ by 11″. Be creative! Think outside the box!  There will be prizes.

They must be finished by the February meeting with a 4" sleeve. These quilts will become the property of the guild for future shows or displays. But for posterity, please put a label on the back or at least sign your name.

Education Notes

Just saw a tip from Bonnie Hunter on Instagram.  She made an inexpensive design wall using two flannel backed tablecloths.  Cheap and portable!

Do you have an empty tabletop gum ball machine?  Cute way to display your button collection in your craft room.

You can use your empty wooden thread spool collection to hold leftover bits of ribbon.  They look adorable stored in a glass jar.

When attending a sewing workshop, I bring along a paper lunch bag and some scotch tape.  Attach the paper bag to your work table.  This makes an easy waste basket for all my scraps and threads and does not take up space on the sewing table.

Knitting needle point protectors are a great tool to use with your scissors when traveling.  No more worrying about the sharp points!

I use a small yellow post it note (size 1 inch) when threading my sewing machine.  Place the yellow post it note behind the sewing needle.  The paper makes it so much easier to see the eye of the needle.  I always have a pack in my travel sewing bag.
