President's Message

Time goes by so fast these days. It seems just yesterday I was being introduced as the new president of Calico Cutters Quilt Guild, and now it’s time to say goodbye.

Our Guild has grown a lot this year; we are now at full membership of 150 members. If you haven’t already renewed you membership for 2016/2017, please do so right away.

What a wonderful May Auction and Tea!  It has been a long time since we held such an event and it was great. Thank you to our Ways and Means committee, Susan Linton, Catherine Morano, Joan Linton and Jennifer Linton, and all the members who helped with this event.  Thank you to Cindy Zencey and her hospitality committee and the membership for all the delicious food.

I would like to thank all the board members.  You have made it easy for me this year by offering advice and guidance and also being the best board anyone could ask for.  And the committee chairs and their members who work tirelessly on so many projects, for our Guild, and for the community.

Thank you to the membership; you are what makes Calico Cutters Quilt Guild so great.

It has been my pleasure to lead this guild. I have grown a lot in this year.  Thank you for all the support you have given me, and for the honor of serving as your president.

 Happy quilting,

Special Events

We are planning a bus trip to the Hershey Quilt Show on Thursday, July 21st. We will be leaving from the Park and Ride Lot in Exton at Route 100 and 113 (near Ron’s Bar and Grill) at 9:00 and will leave Hershey at 3:00. The cost is $38.00 and includes admission to the show (no waiting in line).

At the June Guild meeting we will have a signup sheet and instructions to participate in a “Modern Nine Patch Swap”. Each participant will make 12 blocks that need to be completed by August, and then you will go home with 12 different blocks! Samples will be on display at the meeting. We will be using a new method to make the blocks that allows you to make two blocks at a time.

Contact Sandy Jackson here or at the next meeting if you want to sign up for either program.

Raffle Quilt

Our Raffle Quilt is done and it is stunning!  The Raffle Quilt Committee will be displaying the completed quilt for the first time at our June meting,   The quilt is called "Irish Mist" and has been beautifully quilted by Terry Kramzar.

Net proceeds from the raffle quilt will benefit the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County and will be distributed at the June meeting, along with a photo of the quilt.  All members are asked to sell a minimum of 30 tickets.  Ticket prices are $1 each or 6 for $5.  Our goal is to sell all the 6000 we printed.  Selling tickets for this amazing quilt will be easy!

Thank you to everyone who helped create this beautiful piece.

Education Notes

Sometimes you find quilts in the most unexpected places.  My husband and I had dinner at The Red Rooster in Harlem last month.  It has a southern flavor and menu and as we were eating, I noticed that there was a huge star quilt taking up most of the wall across the room.  It had what looked like slashes of blue fabric through stars – magnificent.

We just got back from Denver on Sunday and one of the stops we made were to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater.  The natural rock formations were just breathtaking.  My boys have been there for concerts so it was nice to see it myself.  Downstairs in the visitor’s center I spotted what I thought was a sculpture on the wall but as I looked closer, I realized with glee that it was a quilt!!!  I took lots of photos and asked the woman behind the counter who made the quilt.  She wasn’t very friendly and didn’t even make eye contact with me (obviously not a quilter!!) but muttered, Judith Trager. I looked her up and found the quilt in the gallery, it is called Walk the Rocks.  Here is the link to her website:

So if you are vacationing, look around and you may find a quilt in unexpected places!  Happy Summer!
